Skiatook’s Maegan Walker Teacher Spotlight Presented by On Call Pediatrics Urgent Care

Many educators decided to enter the career field after having been influenced by someone
in their childhood or college. For Skiatook teacher Maegan Walker, that influence came
from someone in her home.
“My mother just retired from a 35-year career as an educator in Oklahoma. She was the
main influence in my choice to become a teacher and I’m thankful to have grown up
witnessing such a great educator in action,” said Walker.
Walker started her career as a paraprofessional at Ator Elementary in 2016-17 before she
began teaching science at Newman Middle School in 2017-18. But teaching is not the only
way Walker is influencing young lives.
“In the fall I coach 7th and 8th grade volleyball, and in the spring I coach junior high track. I
really enjoy the bond I get to build with my athletes while we work on the fundamentals.
It’s always great when kids come back to visit and share the positive/funny moments they
remember from when they played for me. Winning is great, too. I’ve been very fortunate to
have really good, hardworking students over the years,” said Walker.
Teaching a subject that you enjoy is important and Walker said she enjoys the opportunity
to teach a hands-on subject like science.
“I really enjoy that it can be hands-on and that our topics translate so easily to real-world
scenarios. I always had great science teachers who made the class fun and interesting even
if the work was challenging,” said Walker.
For Walker, Skiatook has been a great place to get her career underway while having the
ability to teach and coach at the middle school level.
“Skiatook is a special place to me because it feels like home. Newman Middle School faculty
and staff are like one big family. It’s a great time to be a bulldog,” said Walker.
Her own education journey started in the small town of Caney Valley where she graduated
from high school.
“I graduated from Caney Valley High School in 2010, from Oklahoma State University with a
Bachelor of Science in 2014, and from Northeastern State University with a Masters in
School Administration in 2020,” said Walker.
In her free time, Walker said she enjoys spending time with family and being creative.
“My free time is typically spent with my family or studying in my Bible. I’ve also owned my
own business, Made By Maegs, since 2019 and I spend quite a bit of time creating things for
that too,” said Walker.
