Maggie Beard is a sophomore at Skiatook High School where she is a member of the varsity
wrestling team. Wrestling is not a new sport for Beard. The sophomore has spent much of
her young life on the mat.
“I have been wrestling since I was six. I love the fact that we can “wrestle to the death” out
on the mat and still be good friends afterwards,” said Beard.
This season Beard and her teammates want to compete for a state title. Beard said the team
is growing and getting better.
“Our Skiatook girls team is growing and full of talented and smart athletes. This year our
girls are aggressive and thirsty for the win. I can’t wait to see where our team is in a few
years,” said Beard. “My goal this season is to be a better version of myself every day, on and
off the mat, and to be a state champion of course.”
Wrestling for Skiatook means Beard gets to be close to her friends.
“I love being a student-athlete for Skiatook knowing I can be there for new friends and
teammates. It makes me eager for the new season every year,” said Beard. “I am currently
part of the school’s yearbook team, The Freakstyle Wrestling Freestyle/Greco Club, I was
recently on Team Oklahoma’s National Woman team, and recently joined powerlifting with
the school.”
In the classroom, Beard said her favorite subject is math and her favorite teacher is coach
Mewbourne. The focus for Beard is her sophomore year, but she does have an eye on the
future.
“My dream college is McKendree University, and I would love to go to school there after I
graduate. They have an amazing wrestling program there as well,” said Beard.
In her free time when she’s not training for wrestling, Beard said she loves to “pig out with
my teammates and friends.”
The sophomore added, “I also love to sleep, run, and spend time with my family.”
